Fun Historical Fact: There used to be more gay and lesbian content in early silent films until religious groups protested resulting in “decency standards.”

THE WAY THE ONE GIRL LOOKS DOWN ALL SHY AND THE OTHER CUPS HER FACE SO SWEETLY TO COMFORT HER- AHHHH

There was more homosexual content in European and even American films in the pre-Code era (although it wasn’t dealt with particularly openly and was often depicted with negative connotations), but in this instance the film is 1921’s ”Orphans of the Storm” - the two actresses are sisters (Lillian and Dorothy Gish) and they’re playing two sisters (Louise and Henriette), one of whom is supposed to be blind, thus the intimacy of their interaction. D W Griffith, the film’s director, was not particularly enlightened when it came to issues of female sexuality, let alone homosexuality.
